The face-off between New Zealand and Bangladesh will be the 13th match of the ICC Women’s T20 world cup and the 7th match of Group A. It will be the 3rd match for both New Zealand and Bangladesh in the tournament. The match will occur on 29th Feb (5.30 am IST onwards) at the Junction Oval in Melbourne. New Zealand had a tough time in the India vs New Zealand Women T20 World Cup match, and they will be looking to bounce back.
Players to watch out for and why
Despite its strong team, New Zealand struggles to find a consistent batsman. Sophie Devine scored a spectacular 75 runs against Sri Lanka, but only managed 14 runs in the next match. Still, the skipper will be a big name to watch out. In the middle order, she will find support from Maddy Green, who has been fairly consistent in getting small runs.
Consistency also haunts the White Ferns when it comes to the bowling attack. Hayley Jensen, their star bowler who plucked 3 wickets in the first match, failed to get any against India. However, the all-rounder Amelia Kerr should be the player to keep in focus. Kerr has been both scoring decent runs and plucking wickets, making her a dependable weapon for the New Zealanders.
The Bangladeshi team has serious problems when it comes to dependable players. Only Nigar Sultana and Murshida Khatun emerged as prominent scorers in the first match against India, scoring 35 runs and 30 runs respectively. However, both failed to impress in the match against Australia vs Bangladesh T20 World Cup clash.
On the bowling front, only Salma Khatun pops out as a worthy enough name. Khatun has taken 3 wickets in the last two matches, even while the remaining bowling attack of Bangladesh crumbled.
Who will win and why
Bangladesh and New Zealand have never faced each other, so it would be difficult to gauge how the two teams would fare against each other. However, we have other parameters. In the ICC T20 world cup history, New Zealand has twice ended up as semi-finalists and twice into the finals. Bangladesh, on the other hand, has never made it beyond the group stage. In the ICC T20 Women’s team rankings, New Zealand stands on 3rd spot while Bangladesh is 9th in rank. In the current tournament, NZ has won and lost one match each, while Bangladesh has lost both of its matches.
Despite all the weaknesses of consistency on the New Zealand side, they still boast of high-calibre players. The likes of Devine and Kerr are among the best players of the game. Bangladesh, on the other hand, simply lacks any player strong enough to counter these opponents.
