CSK, otherwise known as the Chennai Super Kings, is one of the original franchises who have been involved with the IPL since it began back in 2008. They are also arguably one of the best teams in the IPL as they have never failed to reach the playoff stages of the IPL. It’s of no surprise with their continued success in achieving the latter stages of the tournament that they have also won the IPL three times, with the Mumbai Indians being the only team to have won more IPL titles than the Chennai Super Kings. Having lifted the IPL trophy in 2010,2011 and 2018 the CSK team attracts many high-profile players to their squad giving the more fire-power every year. CSK have not only won the IPL three times, but they hold an impressive list of accolades as well. With a win percentage of 61.28%, CSK has the highest win percentage out of all teams in the IPL. Also, CSK has reached the final a record eight times out of the ten seasons the IPL has been running.

CSK is not only regarded as one of the most popular teams that cricket fans worldwide support, but they are also classed as one of the most valuable franchises in the IPL. This is an incredible achievement, considering CSK were banned from the IPL for two years in 2015 due to the franchises alleged involvement in the 2013 IPL betting scandal which included Rajasthan Royals.

CHENNAI SUPER KINGS

The Chennai Super Kings is a team that has lit up the IPL since it began in 2008. With their bright yellow kit, a roaring lion on the team’s logo and moniker of “Kings” in their name, it would be hard to argue this franchise is not the King of the IPL. When the Chennai Super Kings franchise was unveiled, and their owners India Cements were named owners in a deal worth $91million, it came more apparent to as where the name originated. Being team based in Chennai the first is pretty self-explanatory, as to the word “super” this is the word which is used regularly in the Tamil Nadu state, of which CSK is based. The term “Kings” is derived from one of the India cements brands, Coromandel King.

CSK TEAM

The CSK team has managed to retain key players such as MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina over the years it has participated in the IPL. This has been a critical factor for their success, not only because these are two of the finest Indian cricket players who have proven themselves on an international stage. But, the wealth of experience and calmness they bring to the CSK team dressing room is invaluable. MS Dhoni has been a part of the CSK team since it began and has led the CSK team to 8 finals, he is one of the most coveted captains in IPL history.

CSK Team 2019

The CSK team 2019 was more or less the same time they entered in their 2018 IPL campaign. Which was great news for all CSK fans as this meant their in-form and currently most influential wicket-taker, Imran Tahir, would remain to help CSK win yet another title. However, 2019 was the year of the Cricket World Cup in England. You’ve seen it happen in other sports like football, where a player has to put their country before their domestic club. It was expected that both Faf du Plessis (Batsmen) and Imran Tahir (leg-spin bowler), would leave early to join South Africa in their pre-world cup preparations. However, this was not to be the case as both players stayed with CSK for the majority of the tournament. Imran Tahir played a pivotal role in getting CSK as far as the final in 2019, as he was awarded the purple cap for taking 26 wickets in 17 matches. CSK team 2019 performed well in the round-robin phases of the tournament and came second overall, only to be separated by first-place Mumbai Indians on net run rate.

CSK would end up facing the newly re-branded Delhi Capitals in their next CSK vs DC match. Thanks to an excellent performance from their bowling unit and solid opening partnership between Shane Watson and Faf du Plessis helped CSK reach yet another IPL final against the Mumbai Indians. The CSK team 2019 put in a valiant effort in a nail-biting finale, but the Mumbai Indians yet again undid them by one run. Overall, the CSK team 2019 had played good cricket in parts, and their bowling unit was the main reason they managed to progress far throughout the tournament. However, it proved their middle-order would be the pitfall.

CSK Team 2018

CSK team 2018 saw the return of the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL after they had served their two-year ban for alleged spot-fixing. The CSK team managed to retain key players including MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Ravi Jadeja, Faf du Plessis, Shane Watson and Dwayne Bravo. The return of CSK brought joy to many cricket fans all around the world, and fans would come in their thousands to watch open training sessions of the CSK team prior to the IPL 2018 season. The 2018 CSK team also the arrival of some new players such as David Wiley, Sam Billings and Amabti Rayudu. In their opening game, CSK would face a blockbuster of a match against the Mumbai Indians, and this was a match many cricket fans had been yearning for the last two years. The match did not disappoint as it went down to the wire and a brilliant batting display from overseas player Dwayne Bravo, helped CSK win by one wicket. Another notable match was CSK vs DD.

Throughout the group stages CSK won 9 of their games losing 5. Most notably was an incredible run chase against KKR, where CSK successfully chased down 202 runs with a ball to spare thanks to quick blast innings from newcomer Sam Billings. Billings smashed 56 runs off just 23 deliveries. CSK vs KKR 2018 match signalled CSK were still the force to be reckoned with even after their two-year absence.

An inexplicable loss to the “other” Kings by four runs put a lot of pressure on the team for the remainder of the 2018 fixtures. Fortunately, the return home CSK vs KXIP match saw Chennai cruise to victory off the back of Suresh Raina’s 61 not out and Ngidi’s 4/10.

In first playoff match, CSK edged passed the Sunrisers Hyderabad, winning by two wickets and defeating them for the third time in the tournament. CSK had already had an excellent return to the IPL, but this CSK team 2018 was wanting more. CSK faced SRH for the fourth time in the tournament, and they would yet again be victorious thanks to a brilliant century from Shane Watson, who made history by posting the highest individual score in an IPL final. CSK had indeed returned to the IPL, beating all other IPL 2018 teams and picking up a third title to move level with Mumbai Indians.

CHENNAI SUPER KINGS ROSTER

The Chennai Super Kings roster for the upcoming IPL 2020 season is looking to be an interesting one. With one of the vital star players, Shane Watson, announcing his retirement from the Big Bash League, a T20 tournament based in Australia, it has raised questions as to how much involvement he will have left with the Chennai Super Kings. Losing a player of Watson’s calibre would mean a replacement would need to be swiftly found. Watson predecessor as an opener for CSK was also from his native country Australia, with the likes of Mike Hussey, Matthew Hayden all coming before him.

So only time will tell if the Chennai Super Kings opt for another Aussie opener or look elsewhere to fill a void if need be. Regardless of Watson, is has been hinted post-IPL 2019 by head coach Stephen Fleming that they will need to bolster up their squad, in particular, their batting line-up. CSK has an ageing squad and their batting, in particular, their middle order, has been their Achilles heels in previous seasons. A massive boost to the CSK team for IPL 2020 is the inclusion of Ambati Rayudu; you announced his retirement from cricket midway through the CWC 2019. But has since come out and said he would be participating in the new IPL season as he focuses on getting back to fitness.

In terms of the Chennai Super Kings bowling line up, it would be of no surprise if CSK looked to bring in a new pace bowler, with the likes of David Wiley looking like he will be released before the upcoming season. CSK has favoured having some of the best spin bowlers in the IPL, with players like Harbhajan Singh, Ravi Jadeja and Imran Tahir or all featuring heavily. However, as mentioned previously, CSK has an ageing team, and with Harbhajan Singh getting to the tail end of his career, it looks like Imran Tahir will take the lead as the leading spin bowler.

CSK vs SRH

The CSK vs SRH Final of 2018 was highly memorable for CSK, and highly unmemborable for SRK. Thanks to a Shane Watson 100 CSK thumped the Sunrisers in the final.

CSK vs RCB

The other memorable 2018 fixtures were CSK vs RCB. For CSK they were memorable as they went 3 – 0 in 2018, for Bangalore it was a forgetable year getting thump in all three games.  Lets hope 2020 cricket matches are far closer than prior years.

CSK vs MI

CSK vs MI has been one of the greatest rivalries since the IPL has begun, as before the 2019 season both teams had won the tournament three times each. All be it the Mumbai Indians have played two seasons more than CSK due to CSK being suspended for two years. During the group stages, MI defeated CSK twice thanks to a superior batting performance and a superb bowling performance from Mumbai Indians fast bowler Lasith Malinga. Nevertheless, CSK would have third chance to defeat Mumbai Indians in the first qualifier match of the playoffs. Still, a lacklustre batting performance from the CSK team, opened the door for Mumbai Indians to cruise to a 6-wicket win, defeating CSK for a 3rd in the tournament. This meant CSK would have to win their next match to reach the final once again; otherwise, it would be curtains.

CSK vs RR

The CSK V RR 2019 fixtures were both won by CSK despite the herics of Jofra Archer. Winning by 8 runs and 4 wickets in the matches CSK completed the 2019 home and away double over the Rajasthan Royals.

CHENNAI SUPER KINGS BEST PLAYERS

Chennai Super Kings best players have proved year in and out, barring their two-year suspension, as to why CSK is one the best teams in the IPL. Chennai Super Kings has had one of the best batting line-ups in the IPL since 2008. With a star-studded squad fielded year in and out. The likes of Matthew Hayden, Mike Hussey and now Shane Watson bringing some Aussie power to the top of the CSK top order. With experienced Indian cricket players such as MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina apart of the setup, CSK has quality batsmen in their squad. However, it could be argued that the shortcomings CSK experienced in the IPL in 2019 were due to a poor middle order. Their best players carry over to their bowling unit, which includes three of the top 10 wicket-takers in IPL history: Harbhajan Singh, Ravi Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo.

CSK OWNER

The CSK owner has been a hotly discussed topic ever since the franchise was suspended in 2014. In 2008, Narayanaswami Srinivasan was the treasurer and vice-chairman of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), he was also the managing director for India Cements who were the owner of the CSK team. This is where things started to heat up, as the former president of the BCCI pointed out that Srinivasan was violating a clause which outlined that no administrator is allowed to have any commercial interests in the events/matches conducted by the board. The former president of the BCCI, Muthiah took this case to the courts to prevent Srinivasan from taking part in the board’s election, as he was in clear violation of the regulations put in place by the board.

This plea was rejected, and Srinivasan went on to be the Secretary of the BCCI. The clause that was brought into concern by the former president was then adjusted, with the addition of “excluding the IPL”, which would enable Srinivasan to be both the CSK owner and on the board for the BCCI. Muthiah repeatedly tried to disband Srinivasan from being a part of the BCCI but was constantly rejected by the courts; meanwhile, Srinivasan had found himself as the President of the BCCI. It was 2011 when the microscope was extended further on Srinivasan.

Other teams in the IPL, had alleged him of “twisting-arms” and rigging the IPL auction in 2009 so his CSK team could win by England legend Freddie Flintoff. However, Srinivasan unequivocally denied all claims. It wasn’t till 2013 where the ball began to unravel as Srinivasan son-in-law, who was the Team Principal of the CSK, was allegedly caught making illegal IPL bets. This turned into a formal inquiry leading Srinivasan to step aside as President of the BCCI temporarily. The matters of illegal betting and match-fixing probe were not only focused on the owners of CSK but the Rajasthan Royals. After a cascade of events in courtrooms, it was deemed that Srinivasan must step down as President of the BCCI and both CSK and Rajasthan Royals would be handed a two-year ban from the IPL.
